Faith-Filled Western: Stealing the Preacher by Karen Witemeyer
Stealing the Preacher by Karen Witemeyer Copyright 2013 Bethany House Publishers ISBN: 9780764209666 |
A cowboy who wants to be a preacher. An outlaw's daughter who wants to change his mind.
On his way to interview for a position at a church in the Piney Woods of Texas, Crockett Archer can't believe it when he's forced off the train by an outlaw and presented to the man's daughter as the preacher she requested for her birthday. He's determined to escape--which would be much easier if he could stop thinking about Joanna Robbins and her unexpected request.
For months, Joanna had prayed for a minister. A man to breathe life back into the abandoned church at the heart of her community. A man to assist her in fulfilling a promise to her dying mother. But just when it seems her prayers have been answered, it turns out the parson is there against his will and has dreams of his own calling him elsewhere. Is there any way she can convince Crockett he ended up right where he was supposed to be?
With her signature blend of humor, history, and lively western romance, two-time RITA Award finalist and bestselling author Karen Witemeyer delivers a Texas love story sure to steal your heart.
My Thoughts:
Karen Witemeyer's fiction is always a joy to read. Stealing the Preacher, the latest in a series of books featuring the Archer brothers is nothing short of entertaining. While this book focuses a lot more on the religious side than on the romance of her previous novels, I was still able to enjoy the cracking chemistry between Crockett and Jo.
Crockett, as I've come to expect from reading his brother Travis's story, Short-Straw Bride, was nothing short of what I love in a romance hero -- tall, strong, and a take no nonsense kind of guy. Naturally it was easy to root for such a charming and charismatic guy. Joanna, wasn't quiet the fiery, fun-loving redhead that I was expecting from the cover but rather a shy girl who was lacking a bit of confidence. In spite of their crazy and unconventional first meeting, that I'll admit to thinking was going to be a bit silly but ended up being oh-so-delightful, I really liked how naturally their relationship unfolded. The secondary characters were certainly interesting too. Jackson Spivey, the Robbins' precocious neighbor was quiet possibly my favorite part of the whole book. There's a story there with that one! I would LOVE to see him all grown up in a future story. I bet he'd give some girl a run for her money.
All in all, Stealing the Preacher is an adorable story. It focuses mostly on faith and Jo's need to help her father find God so I might not recommend it for those looking strictly for a light-hearted romance but if you love Christian fiction then this book is one you'll want to watch for. Karen Witemeyer is definitely a talent in the Christian fiction market. Her books never disappoint and always earn their spots on my keeper shelf!
