Doctor Who: The Spear of Destiny Review + Giveaway! #12Doctors12Stories

Happy Halloween! Chances are, most of you are or have dressed up as a favorite superhero, princess, or even a character from your favorite story for those Halloween parties or trick-or-treating. I dressed up as Barbie, I'm pretty sure I dressed up as a monster, and one year I went as a blast from the past; a 50s girl complete with poodle skirt.

I have to say if I were going out tonight, I'd go as the Doctor. By now, I'm sure you all know how much I like love am obsessed with Doctor Who, so this probably doesn't come as a surprise to anyone. How could you not want to pay homage to someone as cool and timeless (pun intended) as the universe's favorite Time Lord?

The character of the Doctor is one of the few TV heroes with staying power -- he's been around for over 50 years now and it's easy to see why. Doing good will never go out of style in my opinion! And speaking of style, could it be any easier to whip up a Who costume in the lurch? I mean this guy has some serious fashion sense. Quirky would be the word I'd use most often. Fluffy collars, celery pins, sleek leather jackets, and of course, the "cool" bowtie! You can definitely get creative with your cosplay! You can even get Fido involved. If you need a little help with your costume, be sure to visit the BBC's Doctor Who website -- you can download printable masks!

Book Review:
"The Spear of Destiny"
by Marcus Sedgwick

My Thoughts ~
Like the tales on TV, the Doctor Who stories offer just as much fun and adventure. These short stories that you can read in less than an hour are just perfect to hit the spot if you're suffering from the midweek slump between new episodes. This latest story to feature the Third Doctor, by award-winning author Marcus Sedgwick is a big adventure packed in a small number of pages. You might say this is bigger on the inside. This time the Doctor and Jo come face to face with some rather intimidating Vikings including the mythical Thor and Odin and his powerful spear, Gungnir all orchestrated at the hands of The Master! He who controls the spear, will wield power over all...

In short stories and novellas it's often difficult to develop characters and stories, but since we're already well acquainted with the Doctor and his companions, these stories work well. Sedgwick weaves a tale that remains true to the spirit of classic Doctor Who, complete with little details and nuances that would have shown up in an episode of the show! What's a story of the earlier Doctor without Bessie and that Inverness cape?

This story will appeal to all Whovians, young and old alike. There isn't a more perfect way to introduce classic Doctor Who to the younger generations. If this installment is any indication as to the quality of stories in the special anniversary collection, it's worth adding to your permanent library!

  2. I can't pick just one. Sorry. Pertwee and McGann; Eccleston and Capaldi (although I did adore Smith)

Wonderful. Although, it would be easier to write one word for each Doctor...

  4. 1.) It's hard to choose a favorite, but I would probably have to pick Ten. I just loved his portrayal of the Doctor!

    2.) Wanderer

3.) I would love to go to Oxford in the 50's and meet C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. I'd love to sit in on an Inklings gathering and hear those two read out portions of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. :)

So many places, but I really liked the look and feel of Akhaten. I'd love to see more of that place.
