The Story:
1865
Windmill Point, Michigan

Can She Forgive the Hurting Man Who Costs Her the Role She Loves?

After her father's death, Caroline Taylor has grown confident running the Windmill Point Lighthouse. But in 1865 Michigan, women aren't supposed to have such roles, so it's only a matter of time before the lighthouse inspector appoints a new keeper--even though Caroline has nowhere else to go and no other job available to her.

Ryan Chambers is a Civil War veteran still haunted by the horrors of battle. He's secured the position of lighthouse keeper mostly for the isolation--the chance to hide from his past is appealing. He's not expecting the current keeper to be a feisty and beautiful woman who's angry with him for taking her job and for his inability to properly run the light. When his failings endanger others, he and Caroline realize he's in no shape to run the lighthouse, but he's unwilling to let anyone close enough to help. Caroline feels drawn to this wounded soul, but with both of them relying on that single position, can they look past their loss to a future filled with hope...and possibly love?

My Thoughts:
It's no secret, that Jody Hedlund is one of my favorite historical fiction writers. Her meticulous research and unique settings make her latest series, Beacons of Hope a must-read for all Christian fiction fans. Hedlund's passionate characters are unlike any I've had the privilege of meeting through the pages of a book.

Hearts Made Whole once again takes readers to the quaint lighthouses of the Great Lakes region. This time we meet Caroline Taylor, a woman forced to tend the Windmill Point Lighthouse following the death of her father in an effort to keep her family from ending up homeless. Caroline faces harassment from the men of the town and the lighthouse inspector who believe tending a light is no job for women.

Hearts Made Whole is a fabulous story that accurately portrays the feelings towards women who worked at "men's jobs" in the 19th century. It also showcases Hedlund's ability for penning some seriously delicious romance. I felt that this book had just the exact pace that romances should have. It didn't seem like Caroline or Ryan rushed headlong into a relationship, but realized that they both had issues of their own that they needed to face down before giving their hearts. This story is just one of a few I've had the privilege of reading recently that proves that this summer is going to be the summer of sweet reads! Kudos to Jody Hedlund for her terrific story-telling!

Comments

  1. Loved Ryan's character! He's really the true definition of an imperfect hero who finds the strength to recognize he needs help, and because of this he and Caroline move on to enjoy a much healthier relationship.
