Movie Time: The Great Gatsby (2013)

Is anybody planning to see the latest version of The Great Gatsby? I have to admit that I've only seen the 70s version starring Robert Redford but I really enjoyed it. I'm a little afraid that this movie might be all flash with no substance. The trailers on TV make it seem like a modern day costume party, especially the soundtrack featuring artists like Will.I.Am and Florence and the Machine. That said, I have loved Carey Mulligan ever since Bleak House and Doctor Who and Leo is looking rather dashing -- and the costumes? STUNNING! ;-)  In case you haven't seen it, here's the trailer from Youtube.

There are so many movies that are coming out this summer that I really have to be picky about what I see or otherwise I won't be able to eat for the rest of the year! I love movies as much as the next girl but food's pretty important. If you decide to give The Great Gatsby a try, leave a comment and let me know what you think and whether or not it's worth the ticket price.

  1. This does look gorgeous, Renee! Must agree (plus I think Carey Mulligan is one talented young actress). I plan to see it... but on DVD. One, because I am not a fan of "sad" endings - and like you, I like to "pick and choose" what I see. So far, I think there are others I'd rather see. (On a side note, I was just reading about the editing being really "fast" and not very good. That sounds interesting.)

Hope you like it if you go see it, Renee! I'd be curious for your thoughts if/when you go. :)

    1. I'll probably end up seeing it on DVD too. Considering how quickly these movies are coming out on DVD now (in a matter of 3 or 4 months) the wait won't be that long and I'd rather spend $5 on a rental that everyone can see than $50 for the whole family to see a mediocre movie in theatres. I hope we aren't disappointed!

  2. I also love Carey Mulligan (didn't she also play the silly kid sister in Pride & Prejudice?) and the rest of the cast looks fantastic, but Gatsby's not on my must see list this year :) I'd love to see your comments on it, Renee, if you watch it! I'm mostly interested in Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness, Iron Man 3, Epic, Red 2, and Monsters University :)

    1. YES! Now that you mention it she WAS in P&P as Kitty, I believe! Love her!

I love your movie list! I am so so SOOOOO excited for Star Trek and Man of Steel but then again I have a bit of thing for Benedict Cumberbatch and Henry Cavill. *wink*

  3. I'd love to see your thoughts on it if you see it, too! I really want to watch it, but I'm kind of afraid of what they've turned it into. Plus, I've told myself I HAVE to read the book again before watching it. (Just like The Hobbit, which hasn't been read yet). :S

    1. It's been years since I read the book. My little brother is in 11th grade and they just finished it. I may have to have him give me the Cliff Notes version. Hahaha! It's a skinny book though so I MIGHT find a few spare hours....

  4. I love Baz (Romeo & Juliet & Moulin Rouge & Australia)) so I will definitely see it.
But I'm not sure if I will wait for video or not.

    1. I really enjoyed Moulin Rouge but I haven't seen the others. Baz definitely has a unique style! Hope you enjoy it if you decide to watch!

  5. I quite definitely won't see it in theaters. I guess Mom read the book a few years back and didn't like it...I haven't gotten around to it. Yet. So yeah. But I'd kinda like to see it for the costumes! The trailer is pretty cool...actually, haven't really watched it, just seen snippets here and there. But those costumes! The 1920s were fascinating in so many ways.

Incidentally, I almost want to see Anna Karenina too...I know it's rated R and has inappropriate stuff, but the trailers! Those outfits! Love. And I know it's rather a downer of a movie all in all -- I'm very much NOT a sad movie person. But for the outfits...well, that's one I probably won't see for quite a while.

    1. I know what you mean, Charity! I always cry at sad movies. I love movies that hit you in the heart but I don't how they make me look, I'm a messy crier LOL! I agree, the costumes look Amazing! I love 20s style and am so glad that with Downton Abbey and now this movie, that some of the trends are coming back.

  6. I love the original, and was not thrilled to see a remake, even though I like Leonardo DeCaprio. If I do see it, I will not expect it to be like the movie with Robert Redford, Bruce Dern, and Karen Black.

    1. Yeah, I'm not overly fond of remakes but hopefully it's good and we all enjoy it!
