The Story:
She's planning on instant success. She didn't plan on love.

When Elizabeth Harding arrives in Cheyenne to open her medical practice, she is confident that the future is as bright as the warm Wyoming sun. Certain she'll have a line of patients eager for her services, she soon discovers the town may not welcome a new physician--especially a lady doctor. Even Jason Nordling, the handsome young attorney next door, seems to disapprove of her chosen profession.

When a web of deceit among Cheyenne's wealthiest residents threatens to catch Elizabeth and Jason in its snare, they must risk working together to save one of Elizabeth's patients--even if it means falling in love.

My Thoughts:
***Review contains mild spoilers***
Sometimes the most interesting stories are the ones that reflect the struggles that women face in their professional lives. One of my all-time favorite Christian series' Cheney Duvall, M. D. centers around a fictional 1860s doctor and the ups and downs she faces as a woman in the man's world of surgery and medicine. I was hoping that this story from Amanda Cabot, which also features a female doctor, would connect with me as Cheney's stories did. Although it didn't quite live up to my expectations, it was still an enjoyable read. However, if you're looking for a rollercoaster ride of emotion and a deep connection to the characters, With Autumn's Return doesn't really have that.

Doctor Elizabeth Harding and her handsome neighbor, attorney Jason Nordling have different ideas about women working outside of the home and caring for families. They clash from their first tense meeting. As they get to know each other they both come to realize that compromise goes a lot further than stubbornness, especially when it comes to making a relationship work. The compromises that both make are relevant to today's reader and yet the story still manages to maintain an authentic-to-the-time feel. Cabot did a wonderful job with that aspect of this book, however I just did not feel the chemistry between the characters. They were both likeable and well rounded characters but the romance felt forced. The ending seemed too sudden. Believe it or not I don't think every book should end with a wedding and I was surprised that this one did.

In conclusion, if you've read the previous books in the series, you'll probably enjoy this western romance. It's not chock full of drama, but still is an entertaining and fun character driven story. It's not the most memorable of romances, but I'm glad to have read it.
