The Story:
Dutiful Jessamine Barry is tired of waiting patiently for a man to decide her future. Instead, she's ready to take fashionable society by storm--and finds a rakish young man all too willing to help her do it. My Thoughts:
Coming off a rather lackluster book one I was reluctant to read A Heart's Rebellion, but since Ruth's older books are some of my favorite's I decided to dive in and give this series another chance. I'm so happy to report that this one was worth the day or so it took for me to read. While still not perfect, it's a marked improvement over Moonlight Masquerade and I look forward to seeing how this series concludes.


This time there is less mystery and more romance. Believe it or not, the slower pacing of the story actually kept it from becoming boring which was the main problem with Moonlight Masquerade -- a story that started out dramatically, so much so, that all that followed after the first chapter was a let down. This story focuses on Jessamine Barry, Rees' jilted lover. While she certainly seemed a little immature and snobbish at first, she grows on you by the end of the book. I felt so bad for Lancelot Marfleet. As you might have guessed from his name, he was nothing less than sweet and kind to Jessamine only to be brushed aside multiple times. He's definitely an underdog hero who I couldn't help but root for and fall half in love with myself!*Le sigh*

Ruth Axtell has won me over with this book and I'm very excited to see what happens next. A few of the characters, including Lancelot's sister, have stories that need telling. If you love regency romance that's heavy on Scripture, look no further than A Heart's Rebellion and other Ruth Axtell stories.
