The Story:
John Turner thought only of winning a bet when he swapped identities with his friend the Earl of Ashby. He didn’t wager on winning the fiery Countess of Churzy’s heart with his lies, or on falling for her in return. Publicly humiliated when she learned of the betrayal, the impoverished countess fled, and John thought Leticia was lost to him forever…until fate brings her practically to his doorstep. Can he regain her trust—and her heart—this time as himself?

Determined to make a new life for herself, Letty knows she must avoid Turner—and his maddening kisses—in order to survive. But some things are too intoxicating to be denied. If she turns her back on her dashing rogue—again—will she lose her chance at love forever?

My Thoughts:
Yaaaas! This book has made me fall in love with author Kate Noble! Not only is Leticia Herzog aka Lady Churzy a fantastically refreshing heroine ( a likeable gold digger...yes really!) this romance has a plot that doesn't involve the heroine melting at the feet of the first man who looks twice at her. Okay. I may have lied there, as essentially she did snatch up the first guy with deep pockets, but she actually has brains in her head through the whole thing. Yay for intelligent females! So she is a gold digger, but she's never denied that she wants a good match, so you know what to expect from her from the start. She doesn't come across as vain or snotty, just careful that she doesn't get burned by another bad marriage.

The supporting cast of characters are also fun. I actually didn't much really care for John Turner, but it didn't take away any of the enjoyment of the romantic aspects of the story simply because he didn't interact with Letty much at all. Margaret on the other hand is a pure joy. As Sir Barty's daughter and Letty's future stepdaughter you might expect a great lady of polish and grace, but she's the complete opposite. She shuns proper society in favor of time spent among the flora in her father's greenhouse, and dismisses flirtation in favor of research and facts.

Every sentence and snippet of dialogue seems carefully written. The Lie and the Lady far exceeded my expectations after having read the first, rather lackluster, The Game and the Governess. Knowing that the third book will feature Margaret and her new friend, Doctor Rhys Gray has me champing at the bit. I'm hoping she gets the happy ending she deserves!

~ My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars ~
