Historical Romance

Synopsis: Mariah left her small Colorado hometown when she realized she was expecting a child. Not wanting to shame her family with the scandal of having a child out of wedlock Mariah and her grandfather make up an absentee husband who is supposed to be in Alaska trying his luck in the gold fields. One day he shows up in the form of ruggedly handsome Wes Burrows.

Not willing to break her sons heart by revealing the truth about Wes, she begrudgingly agrees to let him stay. When Mariah discovers the man underneath the handsome exterior is just as nice, she must decide whether to risk her heart and reveal the secret of her sons true father and risk losing the man she has come to care for very deeply.

My Review: I was expecting another great story by Cheryl St. John and I was not disappointed. Even though the imaginary husband concept and how she and her grandfather went about making him up was a little far fetched I was okay with it. It is fiction after all and I want an escape from real life! Mariah is a very likable heroine, and it is very interesting that she is pretty much in charge of running the family brewery.

I liked Wes from the get go. He's ruggedly handsome, a hard worker, and a soft hearted man to boot! Who doesn't love a hero who beats the stuffing out of the antagonist who's twice his size and can adeptly handle a pink clad baby girl?

The chemistry between Wes and Mariah sizzled, everything flowed and wrapped up nicely in the end! I really enjoyed the latest release from Cheryl and am very much looking forward to her next story!

  1. I love the cover and the idea of a woman running the family brewery is certainly not one you see every day in books (or real life). It sounds interesting ~ great review!

  3. Renee - I wanted to write a story about a man getting letters from a boy and then somehow pretending to be the boy's father for a long time. It is pretty far-fetched, and it took me over two years to think it through, during which time I kept rethinking it and putting it back on the shelf, until I finally came up with something that would work.

When I get an idea in my head, I just can't let it go, and it's that one spark that ignites the whole story. For this book it was Wes and the little boy both needing each other.

    Thanks for a great review!
