Books I Grew Up With!

I thought it would be interesting to sort of catalogue some of the books that I grew up reading. You all know that I love to read romance, Christian fiction and historical fiction but I didn't start out reading those. From Clifford the Big Red Dog to Gone with the Wind my literary choices have certainly changed but no matter what you or I may like the important thing to do is to keep reading! You never know what you may learn or if you're like me it will encourage you in your "grown up" life as far as furthering your education or the career path you will choose.

Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell

Does it get any better than a huge, lovable dog? I think I owned every Clifford book by the time I was in kindergarten!

**********

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Suess

I think any Dr. Suess book is a staple in just about everyone's young life.

**********

Disney Storybooks:
Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella

Didn't every little girl read these and dream of being a princess? I know I did!

**********

Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine

Hmmm now that I think of it The Night of the Living Dummy probably started obsession with paranormal fiction! Is it just me or are these still some of the creepiest covers out there?!

**********

The Babysitters Club by Ann M. Martin

Was there any other group of friends as closely knit as the girls in the BSC? I don't know about you but I devoured these books when I was in the 4th and 5th grade.

**********

Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery

These books will never go out of style.

**********

Love Comes Softy by Janette Oke

Did any of you who read Christian fiction NOT get your start on this series?

**********

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

I believe that Rhett Butler is the only mustachioed hero that I ever crushed on.

**********

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

One word for this novel: Darcy
**********

These are just some of the many books that I loved growing up and I still have most of them in my library. What are some of the books that you grew up with?

  1. What a fun idea, Renee!

I looved Clifford and Anne of Green Gables is just a plain classic! I can never get enough of that girl. Loved the Love Come Softly series. I would read Henry and Mudge too. But would you believe it that my mom had to practically drag me to the chapter books when I got old enough? I didn't want to try something new, no matter how much I love to read. Sigh. It's my biggest shortcoming. Being too stuck in my ways.

Oh and Hank the Cowdog! Did you ever read him?

  2. I loved the Goosebumps books and the Babysitter's Club!! I read a lot of Sweet Valley High books, too. I had a set like the Sweet Pickles books, but they were called something else. (I think that's what they were called). My sister had Sweet Pickles, and I had the other. I remember Hester the Jester was one of them. :)

  3. Wow Casey I can't beleive you weren't always a big reader...thank goodness for mom huh? I've never read Hank the Cowdog but it sounds like something I would have enjoyed.

Hey Tammy I loved SVH too! I didn't add them because my list was already super long LOL! I don't think I've read the Sweet Pickles books but I will be looking those up!

Thank you ladies for sharing with me!

    XOXO~ Renee

  4. Ummmmm...Renee....are we like the same person growing up in different times?! I read ALL of these (except Lvoe Comes Softly...)!!! They were like classics : )

Another staple for me was the Little House books. I owned all of Laura's, her daughter Rose's, plus Ma's and Grandma's *wink* I still own all of them. *sigh* LOVED them....truly did.

Harry Potter was "growing up" for me *grin* My aunt bought the first two books when she was in England (they hadn't come here yet still!!) so I read them the summer between 2nd and 3rd grade...I know I'm a crazy kid!

Oh man....don't get me started, Magic Tree House, Little Critter, Indian in the Cupboard, Henry and Mudge, Junie B. Jones (!!!!)....I could go on and on, girl seriously!!

    GREAT post today!!

I haven't been back over to my blog in a while, but your request has been made already *wink*

  6. Love Comes Softly was how I got into Christian Fiction, too! I tried reading Gone w/ the Wind once but just couldn't get into it.

I hope you don't mind that I borrowed you idea and posted about some of the books I grew up with.

  7. I may have to borrow the idea, too, Renee!! We're not complete clones, but really close. :o)

I grew up reading all the Little Golden Books (The Pokey Little Puppy was my fave), along with Little Women and the Anne books. I remember reading some of the Trixie Belden books, too, and yes...the Babysitter's Club books, also (even though I absolutely hated to babysit when I was growing up).

Oh, I think I'll just have to do a post like this before the week's over! Awesome idea, Renee, and a great trip down memory lane! :o0

  8. Oh I was always a big reader, I just didn't want to make the transistion between children's and chapter books. Thank goodness for Mom on that one!! :D

  9. Oh boy, I'm showing my age here girls, but Henry and Mudge, Junie B. Jones and Harry Potter were not around when I was a kid. But I've read them all for work. :)

When I was a kid, I couldn't get enough of the Berenstein Bears, I read every Nancy Drew and the Anne of Green Gables series.

My first Christian fiction book wasn't the Love Comes Softly series...I actually went back to read them after the movies came out.

The books that got me hooked on Christian fiction were This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti and the sequel Piercing the Darkness. If you haven't read them, they're classics!

  10. Hannah, I met the author of the Magic Tree House series, Mary Pope Osborne at the White House Easter Egg Roll one year when I took my kids. I kind of cornered her and pulled a book out of my purse for her to sign. She was going relatively unnoticed, but you know what an author stalker I am. ;) I found her in that crowd of people and it was the highlight of the day. LOL.

  11. Great choices, Renee. I also loved Winnie the Pooh and Little Bear. :)

  13. Thanks for the walk down memory lane! The earliest books I remember liking are the Berenstein Bears and Babar. I still like watching the Babar cartoon that's on NBC on Saturday mornings. Then I loved on to Nancy Drew and the Little House books.

I have never read Love Comes Softly. I don't really care for Janette Oke's writing style. The first Christian fiction books I read were The Russians series by Judith Pella and Michael Phillips.

  14. Well now I'm glad to see that everybody is proving me wrong by never having read Love Somes Softly or at least not reading them till later in life! LOL.

@ Michelle If I picked up a Janette Oke book today I'm not sure if I would have liked it as much so I kind of do know where you're coming from when you talk about not liking her style.

@ Hannah Oh my gosh I think I've read all the Magic Tree House books except for the ones that were released these past few years. Having a little brother who is 15 I read them all at his reccomendation...now he's too busy with video games to read and offer me reading suggestions. :(

@Angie Of course I don't mind if you use my idea! I'm sure my idea isn't unique and someone else in the blog world probably used it before me.

@ Christy I couldn't let Angie borrow the idea and not let you! LOL! BORROW AWAY!

@ Casey Thanks for clarifying, I'm glad to know I wasn't the only kid with my nose in a book. :)

@ Joy I enjoyed some of the Berenstain Bear books when I was younger. I'm so glad to see that they are releasing new books featuring the Bears through Zondervan. How cool that you got to meet Mary Pope Osbourne and that you just happened to have a book of hers in your bag. :-P

@ Suko Winne the Pooh is an absolute classic! My favorite character was Eeyore.

    XOXO~ Renee

  15. There was a time, maybe 4th or 5th grade when I read about 40 of the Goosebump books. I think it was around the time the TV show was on too, I was obsessed. The YA Star Wars books were my next craze. #nerdalert

  16. @ Adam I actually never watched the tv show my mom was picky about what I watched and she barely tolerated the books. I even had to sneek over to grandma's house to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. LOL

    XOXO~ Renee

  18. I LOVE this post! I can list a book I was in the midst of reading for every major happening in my life. And tho' I'm way older than you, Renee, some of the books you listed are classics and were my first loves, too!

When I was young, I was hooked on three particular series: Cherry Ames, Student Nurse; Vicki Barr, Flight Stewardess; and Trixie Belden Mysteries. Check them out on Amazon. The covers are priceless!

I'm totally stealing this idea sometime in the future, but I'll give you the credit for it to my tiny group of followers!

  19. I should mention that I did know MPO was scheduled to be there, that's why I had her book in my purse. LOL. But I tracked her down before she was at her official meet and greet location.

  20. @ Joy Hahaha okay!

@ the other Renee Ann Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I did see the covers for those books and they're actually pretty cute LOL! My how covers have changed through the years. I think my next post will be on book covers!

    XOXO~ Renee
