Litfuse Blog Tour: The Journey of Josephine Cain by Nancy Moser
The Journey of Josephine Cain by Nancy Moser Copyright 2013 Summerside Press ISBN: 9780824934279 |
A pampered socialite embarks on a journey to the Wild West where her life is changed forever.
A setting populated by hundreds of laborers, outlaws, and Indians is hardly the place for a wealthy general's daughter from the nation's capital. But Josephine Cain is determined to visit her father, who supervises the day-to-day work involved in the grandest ambition of post-Civil War America: the building of the Transcontinental Railroad.
Life with the railroad is far from the proper life Josephine is used to, and she faces deadly gunfights, harsh weather, and vigilante uprisings. She is torn between the West and the East; between her privileged upbringing and the challenges of a new frontier; between the pull of the suitable beau her parents approve of and an attraction to a rough but charming Irish railroad worker. But if Josephine is willing, and courageous, she just might find a new life, a unique purpose . . . and true love.
My Thoughts:
The Journey of Josephine Cain is a must-read for fans of romance and historical fiction. Moser's works always have an authentic to the time period feel. As part of the American Tapestry series, Ms. Moser has once again brought the history of 19th century Midwest to life.
Following the Civil War, America was expanding westward making a railroad connecting both the East and West Coasts a necessity. Josephine, desperate to escape the bleak sitting rooms of Washington D.C., follows her father to Omaha with the seemingly honest and charming Lewis Simmons. While there, the beauty and untamed land captures Josephine's imagination and her heart. After such an adventure, life in Washington is less appealing than ever. Josephine must decide between the familiar at home or take a risk and follow her heart and move west.
A few of the characters, including our heroine Josephine, are far from perfect and have deep flaws. Josie's a spoiled brat used to getting her own way and she ends up paying for it. She did have good intentions though, so she wasn't completely unlikable and by the conclusion of the story, I was rooting for her. The Journey of Josephine Cain is well worth the read with interesting characters and a great "Wild West" setting with a little action and adventure to boot!
