The Story:
While she's stalking the truth . . . someone is stalking her.

Psychology professor and criminal profiler Taylor Martin prides herself on being able to solve any crime, except the one she wants most desperately to solve--the disappearance of her father twenty years ago. When she finally has a lead on his whereabouts, Taylor returns home to Logan Point, Mississippi, to investigate. But as she works to uncover the truth, someone else will do almost anything to keep her from it.

Nick Sinclair pens mystery novels for a living, but the biggest mystery to him is how he can ever get over the death of his wife--a tragedy he believes he could have prevented. Now that his estranged brother is the only family he has left, Nick sets out to find him. But when he crosses paths with Taylor, all he seems to find is trouble.

Join the chase as Taylor and Nick search the murky shadows of the past for the keys to unlocking the present--and moving into a future they never imagined.

My Thoughts:
From light-hearted romances, to cozy mysteries, to suspense -- I read just about everything. Lately I've been on a romance kick, so changing it up a bit with a contemporary suspense was just what the doctor ordered to help beat the winter blues and combat cabin fever. Shadows of the Past however did nothing to assuage the chill in the air (not a bad thing when reading suspense, right?). I had goosebumps on top of my chill bumps -- it gave me the shivers, that's for sure!

Taylor Martin and Nick Sinclair share more than just sparks. Nick's estranged brother is a suspect in a murder and possibly is stalking Taylor. Needless to say, Taylor and Nick clash over just about everything at first, including Nick's brother, but agree to work together to find who's really behind it all in spite of a rocky beginning.

Starting out a bit on the slow side, I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book. After the first few tense moments, it took a few chapters to pick up the pace again. If anything, I'd say this relied on the "get-in-your-head" psychological suspense than most I've read in the genre. Black roses, chilling notes, little bits of evidence, memories from a troubled past -- it all built to a breathtaking climax. Of course, with Christian fiction you might expect some references to character's faiths in the midst of all the crime solving and investigating, and while present, it doesn't come across as "preachy." Aside from the slow beginning, this story was very good. This romantic suspense was well done. I'm impressed with Bradley's writing style and her interesting characters. A Promise to Protect, book 2 in the Logan Point series is already on my TBR list!
