Movie Review: North and South (2005)

Thanks to my author friend Laura Frantz for opening up a wonderful comment based discussion at her blog following her on her North and South journey! Last week was her first time experiencing the characters of Margaret Hale, John Thornton, Nicholas Higgins etc. in all their small screen glory.

All the comments throughout the week made me think of all the reasons why I loved this film and recommend it to everyone who loves historical romance. Not only are the actors terrific but the costumes, the setting and the overall plot of this movie make it one of my all time favorites. I guess I'm a sucker for Richard Armitage in a cravat too but that's just an added bonus. The dialogue is so well written that I probably wouldn't have minded if John was a total ogre in the looks department. Yeah right, who am I kidding?

Sidenote: According to IMDB Richard Armitage was one of the first actors to audition for the role of John Thornton and was one of the last to be cast. WHAT WERE THESE PEOPLE SMOKING THAT PREVENTED THEM FROM SEEING HIS AWESOMENESS IMMEDIATELY?!

The only thing that I would like to know about this film is how close it is to the actual novel? Have any of you read the book and seen the movie, if so what are your opinions of it? How does the film compare to the movie? I love the film so much I'm almost afraid to read the book for fear that all other fiction that I read will seem...well...blah in comparison!

  9. You recommended this to me awhile back, and I took you up on your suggestion....um, I was not disappointed! :o) Your dead right on Richard Armitage, too...mmm, he's handsome.

Did you know he's in a BBC tv series of Robin Hood? He's not what I'd call one of the good guys, but the show is great. I think it aired for 3 seasons, then, got canceled. :o(

And here's some early happy birthday wishes for ya, too...hope you have a fabulous week! :o)

  10. I most highly recommend the book. I read the book several years I think before I watched the movie so I don't remember exactly how similiar they are but I enjoyed both equally.
