My Christmas Wishlist!

Christmas is one of my favorite times of year despite the fact that I HATE cold weather. I know Christmas is not about gifts but lets face it we all would like to get something cool or even those fun gag gifts that make us laugh from family or office party gift exchanges.

This year there isn't a whole lot that I want besides an e-reader, yes I've decided to take the plunge and actually buy one or hope Santa brings me one. I was afraid at first that I wouldn't like them because I have really sensitive eyes and anything on a screen is hard for me to read but once I looked at the Kindle in person I was in love...then I looked at the Nook and fell in love again!

So my dilemma is which e-reader should I buy? Do you own a Nook? If so what do you like about it or hate about it? Is a Kindle easy to use? Why do you like it? I would love to hear what you think because I'm really having a hard time choosing between the two.

To thank you for your help I'm giving away a surprise book to one person whose name will be selected at random next Wednesday, December 8th. US residents only please and include your email address so I can contact you if you win! Thanks again for all your help! :-) Oh yeah if you don't have an e-reader let me know which one you will be buying and you can still be entered to win the surprise book!

  1. Honestly, I have a Nook and because of this Nook - we now have several. My son (12) now LOVES to read, my mother now has one, & my mother-in-law is getting on for Christmas (because she kept 'borrowing' my sons). I love it!
Why? Well, I'll skip all of the reasons that make an ereader good because many of them do the same basic stuff and have the same advantages. The tons of free books & galleys, the portability, etc. FYI - a fellow Kindle user & I were talking the other night & we agree the biggest disadvantage of an eraeader is the ease with which you buy books. It's TOO EASY to just buy & buy. Oh, that looks good - it's only $10.... $200 later, huh? At a store you feel the weight while you're lugging them.
What put the Nook above the rest was the compatibility and convenience. Kindle books can only be read on a Kindle. Nook books can only be read on a Nook. But Nook allows you to also read books from Kobo, Sony, Borders, Christianbook.com and you can read PDFs (which just means that I take work wherever I go). Nooks can also share books between devices - all of our Nooks can share the books one of us buy (You just have to type in the credit card number it was purchased with and then all books with that number are welcome - it's simple.)
What I don't like. Yes, I do realize that it's not perfect. I received mine a year ago and have put it through it's paces. I received the 3G Nook. I've used the 3G twice in the last year and both times was to see if it works. Typically, I use the wifi at home or my mother-in-laws or just connect it to the pc. You can get onto the internet with it but it's silly. I got mine to read so unless it's an emergency I'll use the pc.
I hope I've helped a bit. If you have any more questions, please, don't hesitate to email me. reginahott at gmail dot com.

  2. Thank you so much Regina! You've really helped me out here, the Nook does sound amazing. I was wondering about pdf file transfers since I have a lot of them on my PC so I'm glad to know that those can be transfered to a Nook. :-)

  3. I'm a Kindle girl through and through and it's a great year to buy. The prices are phenomenal this year.

I agree with Gina, skip the 3G it's extra and unnecessary.

PS The Kindle can read PDFs too. However you have to email the PDF to the Kindle. Amazon converts it for you for a small fee and delivers it to your Kindle.

  4. I don't have either, but I do want a Kindle myself. From what I have heard, they are both nice, but I am an Amazon girl and I already have the Kindle for Mac app on my laptop, so it would be nice to have an actual Kindle :)

  5. Taking the plunge, huh? ;) I love how they have the e-readers available along with printed copies. I'm like Ariel, I downloaded the Kindle for PC and I like that I can get occasional books for free! (Hey, I'm a poet, and I know it!) ;)

Anyway, I'm still not sure yet if I'm ready to take the plunge, because I just LOVE the feel of books in my hand, stacked up on my desk, and decorating my room. ;) But I hope you can get a great e-reader that will enable you to read even more!

I don't know if this qualifies me for the drawing, but either way it's always fun chatting with you! ;) You're so sweet to offer so many giveaways!

  6. Amber I love real books the best and won't be getting rid of any of my books however when I go on trips an ereader will make it so much easier to take my library with me LOL. Gotta have my books everywhere I go! Yes you are in the drawing. ;-)

Ariel I have the Kindle app too...gotta love the free reads.

Juju thanks for the tip about 3g! :-)

  7. You already know my thoughts...Kindle!! :) I love my Kindle because 1) the battery lasts for a weeks without charging, 2) you can carry up to 3500 books on it, and 3) I feel like usually the books on Amazon are cheaper the Barnes & Noble. Plus, the screen is awesome! It actually looks like you're reading paper, no glare at all...I haven't seen a Nook up close, so I'm not sure if their screen is like this.

Also, Gina mentioned that you can share books with other users on the Nook, I've read recently that Amazon is going to be adding this feature to the Kindle system soon. Good luck with your decision! I'm sure you'll love which ever one you get.

  8. Ah, your wish list sounds like mine. My husband basically has been ordered to get me a Kindle for Christmas.

  9. I don't have an ereader, so I don't know how helpful I will be, but my aunt has a Kindle and LOVES it! I used it a bit when she visited and found it very easy to use and not a strain on my eyes, which I agree, looking at a computer screen for a long time isn't fun, this one works just fine. I also have Kindle for my computer and LOVE it there too. Looking foward to seeing what you get. :)

  10. I'm a Kindle gal. :) It's easy on the eyes, easy to use and you get free books!! My husband and I got my mom a Kindle last Christmas and if she can use it then you know it's easy to use. ;)

  11. I kept telling my sisters I'd never buy an e-reader. Never. Only hard copies for me. I love the smell of real books and the beautiful covers and finding a well-loved old book with the previous owner's name inside it . . . Then I learned you could download Kindle and Nook apps for your pc. I noticed free e-books mentioned at Gina's and Juju's sites. I started using my apps. Now I love the Kindle app! . . . And I've heard a rumor that Santa's bringing me the real thing for Christmas! :)

  13. I LOOOOOOOVE my Kindle!! I won't really go into details because I think that everyone above covered it, but I love it, it's excellent! : D

So what made you decide to choose the Nook? I noticed through reading the comments that almost everyone, I think everyone except Gina actually, said Kindle, but you chose the Nook. Why's that? Not condecendingly, just out of curiousity!
    Talk to you later (tomorrow!!)

  14. Haha Hannah seemingly agains everyone's advice I went with the Nook 3g but only after I considered the fact that my router/modem is THE WORST and I have no idea when it will go out again. With 3G hopefully I will still be able to download books and stuff even when I don't have Internet service which has been happening more and more frequently. We'll see! Thanks again everyone for all of your help! :-)

  15. I'm with Project Journal :) I was surprised and curious on what made you chose the nook too. Especially since the Kindle has a 3G machine too. (Mine has 3G)

    Good luck entering eBook world.
    It's awesome.
Sure nothing compares to a real book but eBooks are superb for traveling and they are always offering free eBooks.

  16. The cost was the main thing. I would have never been able to afford a 3g Kindle or Nook right now but B&N had refurbed 3G Nooks for $119 so that's what I bought. :-)

  18. I don't have an e-reader yet but a Kindle is on my Christmas wish list. I have been reading reviews of people and while I really wanted a Nook in the beginning, now I think I want a Kindle. I already have Kindle for PC and love it. Unfortunately carrying around my PC isn't as convenient as an e-reader.
