Book Review: The Sound of Sleigh Bells by Cindy Woodsmall
While traveling to other Amish communities in search of hand crafted goods for her store, she comes across an intricately carved piece of wood with an Amish scene that captures her heart. Beth's aunt, Lizzie, who has met the handsome Amish carver, Jonah, believes that a relationship between him and her niece could help Beth finally heal. Lizzie has a plan to bring them together through letters but nothing is ever as easy as it seems.
My Review:
This is the the first Christmas book that I have read for this holiday season. I don't usually read novellas because, to me, they always feel rushed. Cindy Woodsmall's The Sound of Sleigh Bells left me feeling as if I had just finished one of her full length novels, everything flowed wonderfully to the end.
It was very interesting to read the letters that Beth and Jonah wrote to each other, as letter writing seems to be a lost art these days. I also liked this book because it gave different roles to the main female characters other than mothers, daughters, and housekeepers that a lot of the Amish novels are based around. Both Beth and Lizzie ran a dry goods store and traveled with only their driver, Gloria for company. The Sound of Sleigh Bells also dealt with some relationship problems that a lot of women in the modern world struggle with, so I guess it was nice for me to see something a bit different from the "normal" Amish story. Even if you don't read Amish fiction you might enjoy this Christmas story. I did.
