Fun Friday: Five Random DVDs

Author Kaye Dacus hosts Fun Friday nearly every week. This week she asks her fans and fellow bloggers to go to their DVD pile, close their eyes and pull out 5 random DVDs and write why you liked them or why you bought them. If you would like to participate go here!

Here are the dvds that I pulled. If you know anything at all about my taste in books then my taste in movies shouldn't surprise you. :-P

1.) Lost in Austen (2008) starring Jemima Rooper and Elliot Cowan

I first saw this movie in summer of 2009 on a post for the Everything Austen Challenge that I was participating in and from the synopsis I knew I had to see it. Once I saw it I knew I HAD to have it...luckily I didn't have to buy it, I just traded for it on Swaptree!

2.) Cranford (BBC 2007) starring Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, Francesca Annis, Eileen Atkins, Philip Glenister, Julia McKenzie, Imelda Staunton, Julia Sawalha, and Simon Woods

Yet another BBC period piece that I absolutely adore! I saw it on PBS (yeah I watch it) and cried my eyes out...so naturally I had to get it. If I get that emotional over something you know it's terrific! BTW I saw Return to Cranford that came out over Christmas and it is just as good if not better.

3.) Jane Eyre (BBC 2006) starring Ruth Wilson, Toby Stephens, and Francesca Annis

Jane Eyre has always been one of my very favorite novels. When I first saw the preview for this version on Masterpiece back in 2007 I knew this was one DVD I had to have, so I preordered it and have since watched it many times over. It is by far my favorite version of the film. One of the very last scenes in the film, when Jane returns to Rochester gets me every time!

4.) North and South (BBC 2004) starring Richard Armitage, Daniela Denby-Ashe, Sinead Cusack, Leslie Manville, Tim Pigot-Smith, Pauline Quirke, Brendan Coyle, and Anna Maxwell Martin

Why did I buy this? Two words...Richard Armitage

5.) Moonlight the Complete Series (2007-2008)

Why oh why did CBS cancel this show? I mean what more can a girl ask for than a hunky, good guy, vampire detective??!! I guess this show was a littttttle too early as it aired right before the whole vampire craze exploded with the release of the first Twilight film. Oh well, I have Vampire Diaries on the CW with Ian Somerhalder! :-P

  1. Fun list. And I LOVE Moonlight!!!!!! Stupid CBS...I still cannot believe they canceled this show just a few months before the whole vampire craze REALLY got crazy!

  3. I LOVE Lost in Austen! I'm still sad that the DVD, for legal reasons, had to take out that her phone's ringtone was the P&P theme music and the scene where she sang Downtown.

  4. I watched Lost In Austen on Christmas..I had rented the movie after seeing you and Lee talking about it. My hubby fell asleep but I enjoyed it. :)

And how funny is this...I have Cranford at home..just rented it. Hope to watch it this weekend.

Going to have to check out the others as I haven't seen them.

  5. I'm probably the only Austen lover in the world who hated Lost in Austen. It stressed me out so badly, I almost couldn't watch the entire thing. Of course, every time I see something which takes Austen's stories and/or characters and either changes them or "retells" them (using the same character names/settings, etc), my immediate thought is, "Quit flogging the poor woman and let her---and her characters---rest in peace!"

Love Cranford and am really excited about Return to Cranford starting on PBS this Sunday!

  8. @ Ruth- I cried when they canceled this,,,I guess you and I were the only ones who watched the show!

@ Lori- I'm sure if you did give these a try you would like them, I know you read historical fiction so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to watch one of the 4 above. LOL!

@Miss Eliza- I KNOW Amanda singing Downtown was like the funniest thing ever!

@Angie- I can't wait to hear what you think about Cranford. If you like it you have to remeber to watch Return to Cranford on PBS this weekend!

@ Kaye- LOL Lost in Austen would be my dream come true so that's probably why I like it so much.

@ Katy- Unfortunately this IS pretty much my collection. I only keep DVDs that I LOVE which is pretty much just what they feature on Masterpiece Classic. I think I need to broaden my horizons a bit,I'm starting to get predictable :-P

  11. I love Swaptree but since I mostly trade for books I haven't been on it as much since I get most of my books from PaperBackSwap and Bookmooch. If you want to check out my profile on Swaptree here's the address.
