So far this week I've read two Amish books and since these aren't my favorite types of books it's rare for me to read two in a season let alone a week! So that being said, if I FINISHED two in a week they had to have been good reads. The Hope of Refuge just may be my favorite story with Amish characters ever!!!!

The Hope of Refuge by Cindy Woodsmall is the story of widowed, single mom, Cara Moore and her young daughter Lori and the constant danger they face from a stalker while living in poverty and fear in the slums of New York. When escaping the dangerous man for what she hopes is the last time, Cara makes a trip to Dry Lake, Pennsylvania, in the heart of Amish country where she stirs up secrets from the past and more turmoil than anyone can imagine, including kind Amish man, Ephriam Mast who is determined to help no matter what. The struggles faced by the close knit Amish community and Cara and her daughter make The Hope of Refuge my favorite Amish book ever!

Cindy Woodsmall did such a terrific job making the Amish characters authentic. There were so many details that I picked up on that anyone who hasn't read Amish fiction before could definitely learn a bit about their culture. For instance, she describes the aprons that the Amish women wear and why they are an important part of an Amish woman's wardrobe. They're not used for cooking but rather to modestly hide the female figure. Too me these are the kinds of details that make a book, along with a great plot and great characters and buggy loads of raw emotion! I did kind of know where the relationships between the main characters and even some of the secondary characters were headed but I thoroughly enjoyed every part of The Hope of Refuge and recommend it to anyone who loves to read about one of the most interesting cultures in our country!
